John Armstrong has been a long-time collector of Kildare memorabilia. He will present an illustrated talk on a unique set of postcards sent from Kildare during World War 1. The postcard images capture the views of the time, but the written messages, brief and all as they were, convey a rare take on the social history of those war years, 1914-1918.
All are welcome to attend.

St Patrick’s Day visit to Ardrass Oratory, Hill and Well – 2017 Outings
We will meet at Ardrass on Friday 17th at 11 a.m. for our St Patrick’s Day visit to the Oratory, Well and Hill.
The well is no longer flooded thanks to repairs made by Kildare County Council. However, waterproof footwear would be useful in order to negotiate any muddy patches at the foot of the Hill.
N.B. the landowner has asked that dogs not be brought up St Patrick’s Hill due to the presence of livestock.

Slide show of 50 years of CCÉ in Kildare
Talking place in the upstairs lounge, Clane GAA
(Preceded by a History walk of Clane with Brendan Cullen – Meet Manzors Car Park 7pm.)

The Kildare Council of Comhaltas Ceolteoiri is marking its 50th anniversary this year – a period in which it is added greatly to the musical culture of the County.
Coinciding with Fleadh Cheoil Chill Dara which takes place in Clane this week the Kildare Council of CCÉ has organised this event which should be of interest to local historians.
Comhaltas in Kildare have maintained an impressive archive of its events and news through the years and a display of this material provides an insight into a perhaps under studied facet of the county’s cultural history.
Organised as part of the County Fleadh 2017.

Newbridge Local History Group’s contribution to Heritage Week will be a guided talk in Connellmore Graveyard at Baroda.
Paul Cooke will take us on a tour of the significant interments of this old cemetery where some of key families in Newbridge’s development are buried.
Connellmore Graveyard has been a burial ground for both Catholics and Protestants in Newbridge since 1736. The last interment took place in 1946.
Many of the great families of Newbridge are buried in this quaint graveyard. From Eyre Powell and Goff to Beasley and Young, there are also military graves that predate the Curragh Military Graveyard which opened in 1866.
All are welcome to attend.

The Kiln Fields, Sallins Bypass – by Noel Dunne.
This illustrated talk outlines the archaeological discoveries made in 2016 and 2017 in advance of construction of the M7 Motorway Upgrade and R407 Sallins Bypass, Co. Kildare.
About 20 new archaeological sites were discovered and excavated, including charcoal-production pits, smelting furnaces, cereal-drying kilns, a brick-kiln, post-medieval roadways, a mill-race, prehistoric cremations and a ceremonial ring-ditch. The most significant finding was undoubtedly an early medieval enclosure complex on the banks of the River Liffey, north of Sallins village.
Please Note: This meeting will take place in the Council Chamber of Naas Town Hall.

The Dictionary of Irish Biography: a cornucopia of Irish experience – talk by Turlough O’Riordan
An indispensable work of reference for scholars, journalists, broadcasters, genealogists, diplomats, and the general reader interested in Ireland’s past or in biography, it is an educational resource of huge potential.
The Dictionary of Irish Biography outlines the lives at home and overseas of prominent men and women born in Ireland, north and south, and the noteworthy Irish careers of those born outside Ireland. Biographies range in length from 100 words to 15,000.
The chronological scope of the Dictionary extends from the earliest times to the twenty-first century. The living are not included. The online edition, which now contains over 10,000 lives, is updated twice yearly. Revisions and corrections are undertaken biannually.
Turlough O’Riordan is the Online and Editorial Administrator of the Dictionary of Irish Biography project at the Royal Irish Academy. He intends to give a Co. Kildare focus to his presentation.

The Workhouse in Birr – a talk by John McLoughlin.
Birr Workhouse is an intact example of the original pre-famine Irish workhouses designed by George Wilkinson. Opened 1842 as Parsonstown Union Workhouse, Birr Workhouse was relatively unaltered, being used mostly for light industry after it was closed in 1921.

This year the seminar will undergo a change in format and location taking place in Celbridge under the auspices of Celbridge Historical Society who have kindly offered to host us. The Seminar will take place in Ireland’s earliest surviving and grandest Palladian Mansion Castletown House.

The new seminar/AGM format will retain its well established emphasis on sharing our experiences and catching up on the activities of the various member groups during the previous year. There will be the usual chance for chats over tea/coffee and an optional lunch will be available locally between the indoor and outdoor parts of the day.
It promises to be an interesting programme of history and heritage in one of our county’s historic estate towns. In the public session which starts at 11am after the AGM, Turtle Bunbury will explore a broad sweep of history from one year, 1847, in a talk based on his very popular book 1847: a Chronicle of Genius, Generosity and Savagery.
Turtle Bunbury is the author of Vanishing Ireland and The Glorious Madness: tales of the Irish and the Great War. His most recent book is 1847: a Chronicle of Genius, Generosity and Savagery (Dublin: Gill 2016), in which he focuses on the historical events of a single year, 1847 – a revolutionary year that, in Turtle’s own words, ‘turned the world upside down’. In this globetrotting history he addresses everything from the trauma and horror of the Great Famine, to the showmanship of Lola Montez and Tom Thumb.
After lunch we will focus in on the local heritage of Celbridge, with a walking tour starting at 2.15pm at the Slip Hall (Behind Christchurch at the main gates of Castletown). Celbridge has a wealth of historic architectural structures of regional and national importance, and boasts connections with many highly significant historic personages from its era as an estate town. Celbridge, however, has much older roots stretching back to early ecclesiastical settlements as its name would suggest.
Both aspects of the town’s heritage will be explored in a tour guided by Clebridge Historical Society which will visit some of the towns most historic locations including an 18th century town house garden, Celbridge Abbey grounds and an early ecclesiastical site in Tea Lane which ties both strands of the town’s history together.
So make a note in your diary for the 7th of October!

The Archaeology of Sallins Bypass – by Noel Dunne.

Thanks to Noel for use of the site images!
All are welcome to attend.

Mason and builder, Joseph Kevin Bracken (1852–1904), who married Hannah Agnes Ryan (1872–1928), was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and one of the seven founders of the GAA. His son, Brendan Bracken (1901 – 1958), disassociated himself from the family and created a new persona for himself in Britain eventually becoming the 1st Viscount Bracken, a Privy Council, and a minister in the British Conservative cabinet of Winston Churchill during the Second World War.

Professor Jim Walsh, Maynooth University, will give an illustrated lecture Maps Rather Than Tractor Parts – Horses to Tractors – the spread of a revolutionary innovation in farming in Ireland, 1917 to 1991
The lecture will trace the development of tractors in North America in the late nineteenth century and their transfer to Great Britain and Ireland. The main focus will be on mapping and interpreting the spread of tractors across the country as part of the transition from farming as a lifestyle reliant on horses and many farm workers to one that became business-like with a heavy dependence on technology and a drastically reduced input of labour.

Michael Rowley will give an illustrated talk on the following:
In October 1941, a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 medium bomber crashed on the Blackstairs Mountains, Co. Wexford, killing its four crew members. Aircraft of this type had earlier in 1941 bombed the Curragh and in a seperate incident the North Strand, Dublin, resulting in many civilian deaths. Within the military district of the Curragh Command, Local Defence Force Volunteer Jim Rowley was posted as sentry on the wreckage of the Heinkel bomber. Now drawing extensively on once top secret G2 Military Intelligence files relating to the crash landing of belligerent aircraft, Michael will discuss the subsequent intrigue surrounding the recovery of this fateful aircraft. To illustrate this talk Michael will have on display on the night over a dozen artifacts recovered from original Heinkel’s He 111 aircraft.
