A display and illustrated talk to showcase the Schools Folklore Collection from 1937-1938 and material from schools around County Kildare.

In 1937, the Folklore Commission asked primary school teachers around the country to encourage their pupils to collect local history, weather lore, cures, riddles, proverbs, etc from older people and write it down. Not every school participated as it was a voluntary scheme.+

The original copy books completed by the children are stored in the Folklore Department, UCD while a microfilm version of some material is held in Local Studies, Newbridge. There will be a display of photographs and material from the copy books. The talk will last about 30 minutes with plenty of time for questions and discussion. Lists of schools involved from County Kildare will be displayed and it would be wonderful if original pupils and/or their families were able to attend.
