A Kildare Kaleidoscope – from the IFI Archive

IFI Local Films for Local People is the IFI Irish Film Archive’s popular programme strand which brings rarely-seen archival films out of the vaults back to the counties where they were made.

A KILDARE KALEIDOSCOPE is a delightfully varied programme of short films made in and about Kildare from the 1900s to the 1970s. It includes the first film ever made of a Grand National Winner at Eyrefield Lodge Stud in 1902; the peat cooperative at the Bog of Allen (1920s); a grim snapshot of Ireland written by Rathangan’s Maura Laverty (1947); an upbeat film about Irish Ropes in Newbridge (1955); newsreel stories from the 1960s about a Chinchilla farm in Naas,
go-kart racing in Castledermot, the Batchelors Peas factory in Athy, waterskiing in Ballymore Eustace and the opening of a bubblegum factory in Kilcock; a charming film about catechism class for the primary school pupils of The Curragh School (1976) – and lots more besides!

With an introduction from IFI’s Sunniva O’Flynn who will welcome feedback from local viewers who may recognise previously unidentified people and places on this journey through Kildare’s historic past. Programme duration – approx. 70 mins.
