The Birth of a Nation – Event will take place on Thursday 9th November, 2023, at 19:00, in the Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge.
County Kildare Decade of Commemorations celebrate the end of a successful programme with a musical extravaganza set against the backdrop of Irish history up to the founding of the modern Irish State. The Birth of a Nation concert features songs and music from the period. It was a time of significant change, which impacted the lives of people throughout the country from all walks of life, a period of rebellion, war, emigration, and political and social upheaval. A marvellous, sometimes whimsical, but often tragic journey, guaranteed to move and entertain. Featuring tenor Paul Linehan with Ann Cullen on piano and violin. Songs include: The West’s Asleep, The Minstrel Boy, Boolavogue, Danny Boy, A Nation Once Again, Oró, Sé Do Bheatha Bhaile, and The Foggy Dew. Script and narration by Mario Corrigan.
The Birth of a Nation was performed in Lexington, Kentucky in 2018 to great acclaim and in the hallowed halls of Leinster House on Culture Night 2022. This event offers a last opportunity to mark the end of the commemoration period by reflecting on what passed 100 years ago.
The evening will start with refreshments and the launch of A Nation is Born: Ireland in Colour 1923 – 1938 by Rathangan man, John O’Byrne and Michael B. Barry, followed by the concert The Birth of a Nation, as well a slideshow highlighting many of the events which have taken place throughout the Decade of Centenaries.
On the night, the County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee will offer thanks to the many artists, performers, individuals and communities who have made the decade such a success in Kildare and provided a legacy of work for future generations. Please come and allow County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee to thank you as the curtain comes down on a remarkable programme of events and creativity, a programme of solemn reflection, commemoration, and celebration of this nation’s journey toward nationhood.
