MA in Local History at NUIM

Maynooth University are relaunching their famed MA in Local History in September 2023. There are still some places available on the programme but the deadline for applications is fast approaching – Friday 30 June 2023.

This taught MA can be taken on a full-time or a part-time basis. The programme typically attracts applicants from diverse backgrounds, including recent graduates, mature students, retirees and others.

For anyone who would like to find out more:

The capstone of the MA in Local History is a 20,000-word thesis and we are always interested to hear suggestions for topics from around the country. Maybe there’s a local historical person, event, place or building just crying out for attention?! Perhaps it’s time to revisit the legacy of someone or something in your area that has been misunderstood all these years? Is there a significant anniversary on the horizon? Has something become more topical now due to current events and priorities? Many of our MA theses have gone on to be published in the Maynooth Studies in Local History series, the internationally recognised standard-bearer that celebrates the work of postgraduates in local history all across the island.

There is more good news! This year we are delighted to offer two full-fee Stackallan Scholarships for students doing the MA in Local History whose thesis specialises in Irish country-house studies.

Entry requirements
Students who have an honours degree with a 1:1, a 2:1 or high 2:2 grade in History will be offered a place.

Other applications will be considered depending on life experience and available spaces. Applicants must have a recognised degree equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
