AGM & Talk by Seamus Cullen

Celbridge Historical Society
Our AGM which, with great sadness, was postponed in September, now has been rescheduled for Monday, 4 November 2024 at 7.30 pm in Celbridge library.
As usual, the outgoing Committee will retire at the AGM. Some outgoing Committee members are willing to stand for re-election and nominations for active new members are welcome. You are invited to submit your nominations in advance of the election, by Thursday 31 October. (N.B. to take part in the election, please ensure your subscription is up to date).
At 8pm, Seamus Cullen will give an illustrated talk: ‘Connections, Routes & Networks: Celbridge from the Norman period to today’.
Seamus’s talk gives a detailed account of the roads in and out of Celbridge over an 850-year period. The earliest roads were built by the Normans and bridges followed. The roads network changed over the centuries as did the methods and forms of transport.
A number of aspects will be covered in the presentation including the effects the turnpike road system of the 18th century had on Celbridge and the various routes historical figures such as Jonathan Swift and Speaker Conolly would have taken when travelling to Celbridge. While the connection Celbridge has with Dublin has always been visible, the important connection to west Kildare is not as noticeable and this has been a surprising revelation in the research.
Everyone is welcome to what promises to be a fascinating presentation.
