A ‘Greenish’ Transition? – Online Seminar

A ‘Greenish’ Transition?
Online Seminar Saturday November 30th from 10am to 12 noon

For communities across the greater midlands the term ‘Just Transition’ is associated with the ESB’s closure of the Shannonbridge and Lanesboro Power Stations, and the ending of peat extraction.

This seminar will explore what communities can achieve for themselves in changing times. Faced with profound change – where do communities start, and is their history an asset or a burden? Where can communities find the energy and skills to respond to ‘Climate Change’ and are there lessons to be learned from other parts of the country.

Introduction – A snapshot of Just Transition to date referencing the Just Commissioner’s reports.

Dr Tomás Mac Conmara an award-winning oral historian and author from County Clare will make the case for a systematic approach to gathering the Oral Histories of former BnM and ESB workers across the Just Transition Region.

Mary O’Malley, a volunteer with CALL – Climate Action Louisberg Locality – will describe a community ledapproach to climate change which has taken a a number of initiatives such as community forestry and a solar panel meitheal, and which draws heavily on community expertise and energy.

Anne B Ryan an active member of Feasta: The Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability, will respond to the morning’s presentation citing examples of creative projects in other communities.  This is a free online event funded by Kildare County Council and Creative Ireland.
