CKAS on the passing of Professor Raymond Gillespie

County Kildare Archaeological Society is deeply saddened to record the death of Professor Raymond Gillespie on Thursday 8 February 2024.  A distinguished historian and author, Raymond’s contribution to the County Kildare Archaeological Society over a long number of years was immeasurable in his role as Honorary Editor which commenced with its 1992-1993 Journal through to its 2014-2015 issue.  During this period he edited a total of thirteen Journals for the Society and an off-print entitled ‘St Brigid’s Cathedral Kildare, A History’  takenfrom the 2000-2001 Journal.  On standing down as Honorary Editor in 2015, he was appointed Honorary Assistant Editor and was involved in the production of three further Journals.

Raymond’s expertise and valuable advice was greatly appreciated in the setting up of both the Society’s Lord Walter FitzGerald Prize for Research, its Student Grants programme and in the organisation of numerous conferences and seminars.

This long involvement with the Society and his interest in its activities earned Raymond the highest regard and respect amongst its membership and he will be sadly missed.  We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Bernadette, his family, friends and colleagues.
