Maynooth University are delighted to announce a new Masters in Irish and Local History. The programme, which starts in September 2026, is the only one of its kind in Ireland and offers a unique opportunity to examine the rich subject area of Irish history through the lens of local history and heritage. The Masters traces the historical development of Ireland from the medieval period to the present – from rural settlements to global networks. Areas of study reflect the research expertise of the Department of History staff in Maynooth University. Varying from year to year, they may include medieval Ireland, historic Irish houses and landed estates, art and material culture, Irish migration in early modern Europe, women’s history, social history, religious history, Ireland’s relationship with empire, heritage, conservation and cultural tourism.
We welcome applications from candidates with a Bachelor degree in history, however we will also consider candidates of other degree backgrounds or candidates without a degree on a case by case basis. You can read further details of the programme and how to apply on our website.
