St Patrick’s Day Walk – Celbridge
As St Patrick’s Day approaches, we are planning our annual visit to Ardrass, on the road to Barberstown. First, the ruined 15th century church dedicated to St Patrick and still with its stone roof, sitting on an earlier ecclesiastical site. An onward walk to the holy well nearby, maintained with care – there is a lovely image of it on the cover of a gazetteer of the holy wells of Kildare produced by Kildare County Council. And finally a climb above the well, to the top of St Patrick’s hill with its wonderful view for miles around.
We are very grateful to Rodney Hendy for facilitating access to the Church, and to Padraig Hanly, landowner of the Hill, for permission to enter his land and climb.
Please note that it is quite a strenuous climb and the ground is uneven. Bearing in mind the recent months of rain, we suggest that you wear suitable footwear.
Our visit will be led by well-known local historian, Eoghan Corry.
LOCATION: The church is situated behind Ardrass Lodge off the Clane Road R403. Limited parking available. Please meet at the Church from 10.30, for an 11.00 am start.
ROUTE TO THE WELL: The Well is at the roadside further along the R403. It is a busy road so please act with caution, especially if you have charge of children. From the Church return to the R403, cross it and enter the field opposite, then walk along the headlands parallel to the road. At the exit, with caution, cross the R403 to the Well. Access to the Hill is behind the Well. Please exercise great caution on the route back to your car.
