Poetry workshops for adults

A hundred years ago, Ireland was at war. To understand and reimagine the experiences of local people caught up in the Civil War, you’re invited to two writing workshops. These are part of the exciting all island project Poetry as Commemoration, organised by UCD Library in partnership with Poetry Ireland and Arts Council Northern Ireland. It is supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
Author Debbie Thomas, with Kildare County archivist Karel Kiely and historian James Durney, will be on hand to offer some guidance and historical context as you examine and explore Interment Camp autograph books from the Rath Camp (1921) and Tintown Internment Camp (1923), Curragh, Co. Kildare. These books include poems, songs, drawings, dedications, and photographs. You will use the archival items, along with your own family stories, to inspire a poem or other creative work.
Your work will join that of other local groups across Ireland and be preserved in the UCD Special Collections. As you engage creatively with the past, so your writing will inspire future generations to understand the history that has shaped our country.
