On 22 April 2023 Martin Heydon TD & Minister of State will launch ‘A Life’s Harvest: Stories from the homeplace Loraine’ at 8pm at St Laurence’s GAA Club, Narraghmore.
Frank Taaffe, Historian, will act as MC for the evening. The book is based on the life of recently deceased Jim Connell, a local farmer, card player and lifelong supporter of the St Laurence’s GAA Club.
It will be available for sale on the night for a special price of €15 and part proceeds are going to the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation.
Born in 1930, Jim Connell lived for many decades on the family farm at Loraine near Narraghmore in south Kildare. In his eighty-sixth year, he spent several months in Naas General Hospital and against the expectations of all, he returned to live at home. In recent years, he shared his memories and thoughts in a series of recorded interviews. A wide range of topics was covered and the book is based on the edited transcriptions of these interviews.
His son Tom is encouraging everyone to join him in an evening of reminiscing and as to why he choose Jack and Jill Foundation. Tom stated “Since its set up in 1997 by Jonathan Irwin and his wife Mary Ann O’Brien, I am aware of J&J’s county Kildare origins. In addition, I am familiar with the work of the charity as my wife Martina is a neonatal nurse in University Hospital Waterford. For both these reasons, I believe, there is an excellent cross-fit in this fundraising initiative.”
