Celbridge Historical Society AGM

Greetings dear Members,

At last, thankfully, after two and a half years, we are able to return to our regular monthly meetings in Celbridge Library.

We have prepared a lively programme for the coming months which will include Professor Terence Dooley, author of the recently published Burning the Big House.  Our first speaker will be Dr Ciarán Reilly.

AGM

Our last AGM took place in February 2020.  Within six weeks of that meeting Covid had struck and everything stopped.  After such a lapse of time, your committee feels it is important to hold another AGM to enable members to review the past, consider the future and elect their committee.  Nominations very welcome (nominees must agree beforehand to their name being put forward).  The current committee will stand down but are willing to have their names put forward.

The AGM will take place in Celbridge Library on Monday 3 October 2022, at 7.30pm, before Ciarán Reilly’s talk.

FIRST TALK

Monday 3 October 2022 at 8pm, following the AGM.

Speaker: Dr Ciarán Reilly.

Subject: Life at Carton House and the wider Maynooth area in the early 19th century.

This talk will examine life at Carton House, home of the FitzGerald family, and the wider Maynooth area in the early 19th century.  Using the diaries of Henry Joly, tutor to the Duke of Leinster’s children, as a source, the talk will examine aspects of education, sport and leisure, and events in county Kildare during the years 1800-1803.  This was a tumultuous time for both the FitzGeralds and the people of Maynooth, coming as it did between the 1798 rebellion, and the 1803 rebellion led by Robert Emmet.

We look forward to seeing everyone again!

Your Committee:  Penny Woods, Chair; Jeanne Meldon, Vice-Chair; Lynne Geraghty, Treasurer; Kay Carroll, PRO; Nuala Walker, Secretary
