St Mochua – Annual Feast Day

Celbridge Historical Society
To Members of Celbridge Historical Society and representatives of Clondalkin, Timahoe and Rathcoffey history groups;
You are kindly invited to help us celebrate the St Mochua / St Crónán Annual Feast Day event on Wednesday 6 August 2025 at 3pm: in the Maunsell Chapel at Tea Lane Graveyard, Celbridge.
Our Chair, Penny Woods will introduce proceedings and we are delighted that, as an acknowledged authority on St Mochua and related history, Seamus Cullen* has kindly agreed to give us a talk.
There will be an opportunity given for representatives of the Clondalkin, Rathcoffey and Timahoe history groups to speak if they wish.
This will be followed by a short walk to the village where refreshments will be offered in a lovely garden setting.
*Today the feast days of St Patrick and St Bridget, who are both recognised as patron saints of Ireland, are celebrated nationally on 17 March and 1 February respectively. Until the late medieval period local early-Christian missionaries were commemorated on their feast days, in the form of local festivals. One such 6th century missionary, St Mochua, also known as St Crónán, is acknowledged as the local patron saint of four different locations: Celbridge, Clondalkin, Rathcoffey and Timahoe.Since the revival in 2004 of an event to mark the feast day of St Mochua / St Crónán on 6 August, the four districts have taken it in turn to hold the event. This year Celbridge is hosting the St Mochua Feast Day event with a talk in the Maunsell Chapel in Tea Lane Graveyard, adjacent to the site of the 6th century early Christian Church built by St Mochua.
Kindest regards,
Nuala Walker, Secretary
on behalf of Celbridge Historical Society
