Public Transport – text by Paul Croghan

Maynooth had been served with transport to Dublin by barge from 1796 with the opening of the Royal Canal. However, a journey to Dublin took almost four hours.

From around this time Maynooth was a stop on the horse drawn coaches between Dublin and Galway stopping at the Leinster Arms.

By 1847 the railway had come to Maynooth with a mainline service and in 1981 a commuter service was started serving a number of stations between Maynooth and Dublin.

The bus route from Dublin to Maynooth and Celbridge was started by the General Omnibus Company at an unknown date between 1925 and 1934.  It was absorbed into the Dublin United Tramways when Routes 66 and 67/ 67A were applied. Coras Iompair Eireann took over the services in 1945.
